Westchester Arc plans to move into its new Gateway to the Community in early summer. At this point, the elevator has being installed, main lobby floor tile is being layed, inside painting is almost complete, the restrooms have been tiled, sinks are operating and carpeting is being installed. Outside, beautiful landscaping, curbs, sidewalks, and entrance are near completion. The front door has been installed and work stations have been delivered.

Westchester Arc’s board of directors has approved up to $15.5 million for the project, including purchase of the land. A $12 million bond from the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York will provide interim financing while the agency conducts its first capital campaign and obtains funds from the sale of its building at 121 Westmoreland Avenue, White Plains. The Dormitory Authority provides tax-exempt financing to various non-profit organizations providing social services. A portion of the bond may remain as a long-term mortgage after the capital campaign is complete.

The White Plains facility is currently in contract with Benerofe Properties, Inc. of Harrison, New York.  A closing date has not been set.

The capital campaign has set itself a $7.5 million fundraising goal—$6.57 million to help pay for the new building and $2 million to establish a long-term Fund for the Future. The Fund for the Future will safeguard services such as our pre-school and guardianship programs that receive little or no government financial support. To date, the campaign has raised over $6.4 million.

“The capital campaign’s theme is ‘Envision Possibilities,’” explains Ric Swierat, executive director,”because it will support individuals with developmental disabilities in their efforts to eradicate stereotypes and to promote recognition of both their personal talents and their right to participate fully in community life.”

The “Gateway to the Community” will replace the agency’s central location at 121 Westmoreland Avenue, White Plains. A former munitions plant, the current site is incompatible with the needs of a population expecting a high level of involvement with society at large. The new center will feature performance and gallery space to showcase the creativity of individuals with developmental disabilities. It will be a place where people with disabilities and their families can network, consult social service professionals and have access to other resources enabling them to make decisions concerning their futures.
